Tennis is in a state of transition, and many of its greats are finishing their careers. Andy Murray is one of the players in his final season, and his swan song may have been cut short due to a back injury.

On Wednesday, Murray faced Jordan Thompson in the second round of the cinch Championships. Unfortunately for Murray, he was forced to retire after one set due to a back injury.

The 37-year-old was back on the court less than 24 hours after his first-round match against Alexei Popyrin. However, Murray told reporters that he knew something was wrong before stepping onto the court, with the issue worsening during warm-ups and the match.

Following a medical time-out after the third set, Murray lasted just two more games before stopping at 4-1. In an emotional goodbye, Murray waved goodbye to the crowd in what will likely be his final appearance at the Queen's Club in London.

Murray has won Queen's Club Championships (also known as the cinch Championships) a record five times. However, he is not expected to extend his career beyond Wimbledon and the Summer Olympics in Paris.

Given this most recent injury, now Wimbledon and the Olympics might also be in doubt for the 3-time Grand Slam champion. Tennis fans can follow Sports Illustrated's Serve on SI for all the most important news from the sport.
