World No. 1 Iga Swiatek Upset in Third Round of Wimbledon
Grass courts have never been kind to Iga Swiatek. The World No. 1 knew that entering Wimbledon, and she was also well aware of the treacherous bracket awaiting her in the women's singles tournament.
Despite her best effort, Swiatek came up short against Yulia Putintseva in the third round of Wimbledon on Saturday afternoon. Putintseva defeated Swiatek in three sets: 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
After the match, Putintseva was asked why she played so effectively today. She answered, "I was thinking while I was playing that I beat the World No. 1 before on grass... I think it's meant to be."
Today's match is Putintseva's second win over World No. 1, and it secured her first trip to the fourth round of Wimbledon. She will face Jelena Ostapenko on Monday, July 18.
When asked about her upcoming match against Ostapenko, Putintseva joked, "Can I just rest for a moment?" The World No. 35 will not have much time to rest, but she will have a lifetime to remember her major victory today.
