Caitlin Clark Falls One Rebound Short of History in Fever Win over Mercury

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Caitlin Clark messed around and almost got her first career triple-double. No rookie has ever done so in WNBA history and Clark fell just one rebound short recording 15 points, 9 rebounds, and 12 assists in the Indiana Fever win over Diana Taurasi and the Phoenix Mercury.

Surely Clark will take the result without the statistical achievement as it was the Fever's first win against a team over .500 all year. It also moved them past the Chicago Sky into playoff position as Chicago fell to the Minnesota Lynx.

Clark got some big help from teammate Kelsey Mitchell in the second half as Kelsey cooked the Phoenix defense, with nearly all of her production coming after halftime. Mitchell is Indiana's leading scorer on the season.

Taurasi had 19 in the highly anticipated matchup between WNBA legend and heralded rookie. But it was Clark who got the victory, though she stated after the game it didn't mean any more coming at Taurasi's expense.

There wasn't any tension as Caitlin and Diana shared a nice moment caught by cameras on the court, while Clark made her impact felt all over the floor. CC is one of just three players in the W in the top 20 in points, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals alongside Breanna Stewart of the New York Liberty and Napheesa Collier of the Lynx. Which is enough to put her on the odds boards for MVP, in addition to being the favorite for Rookie of the Year.

Even if she wasn't able to get that one rebound to secure a triple-double.
