Caitlin Clark Generated Unprecedented Points in Breaking WNBA Assists Record

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark broke the WNBA assists record for a single game by dishing out 19 dimes in a loss to the Dallas Wings. But in doing so she was also responsible for putting more points on the board than any player ever has. Clark scored or assisted on 66 of the Fever's points, which is the most in league history according to ESPN, surpassing the previous mark held by Diana Taurasi. By the math Caitlin had a hand in 71% of the total points scored by Indiana, a staggering number. The figure only adds to her lead when it comes to points generated across the entire league for the season making it hard to argue she is not already the top point guard in the W.

Clark was a bit critical of her performance afterwards saying, “I just try to set my teammates up for success. I think at times, I can almost over-pass and there could have been a few times where, instead of passing that leads to turnovers … I could probably shoot the ball.” Though her All-Star teammate Aliyah Boston was more complimentary as she often is dubbing what CC did, "pretty cool". AB was really the only other Fever player who had a strong showing against the Wings, putting up 28 points on 11-14 shooting.

Clark, Boston, and fellow teammate Kelsey Mitchell will now head to the All-Star Game in Phoenix, though Caitlin will not be participating in the 3-Point contest. The trio will take on Team USA along with the rest of Team WNBA, including Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese. After that CC and the team will get a much needed break from what has been an extremely hectic and eventful season. Then it's probably back to breaking more records once play resumes following the Olympics.
