Chicago Sky Trade Marina Mabrey to Connecticut Sun

The Chicago Sky have made a huge trade with the Connecticut Sun. As first reported by the Chicago Sun Times, the team is sending guard Marina Mabrey to the Sun in exchange for a package including Moriah Jefferson, Rachel Banham, and draft assets. The Sky will receive the Sun's first round pick in 2025 and the rights to swap picks in 2026, in addition to the two players who played sparingly for Connecticut.

Mabrey has had a strong season for the Sky so the news does come as a bit of a surprise, especially given she was one of the team's most consistent scoring threats. Marina is averaging 14 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game, while connecting on over two 3-pointers per contest. On paper she is a great fit with Connecticut, a squad that needed some shooting and shot creation. Chicago's former general manager had previously acquired Mabrey in a deal built around multiple first-round picks so this could be an effort to recoup on draft capital.

It remains to be seen how the Sky will make up for Marina's scoring, as she was second on the team behind breakout star Chennedy Carter. Meanwhile, it appears the Sun are attempting to position themselves for a serious WNBA championship run.

Connecticut is sitting at second in the overall standings and has gotten strong seasons from the likes of DeWanna Bonner, Alyssa Thomas, Brionna Jones, and DiJonai Carrington. Adding Mabrey to the mix should put them right with the Las Vegas Aces and New York Liberty when it comes to top level roster talent.
