Chennedy Carter Is an All-Star for the Chicago Sky

Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports

If there is a tougher cover in the WNBA than Chennedy Carter, I haven't seen her. That is separate from how a player might dominate inside, or another might make plays for others. I'm simply referring to one-on-one coverage and staying front of the opponent. In that specific situation, Carter cooks more than anyone. Just ask Kelsey Plum.

The Chicago Sky star had her way with Kelsey and anyone else the Las Vegas Aces wanted to throw at her en route to dropping 34-points on the defending champs. This wasn't an isolated performance from the Sky's version of CC either. Carter is averaging over 16-points a game on the season and that number is over 21-points per contest since Chennedy was moved into the team's starting lineup. Carter is certainly the most fearsome matchup on the Sky from an offensive standpoint and has been the catalyst in most of their biggest wins.

Of course understanding the context of Carter's situation is important as well, given Chennedy had some past issues that saw her bounce around and eventually out of the league. So it is not like everyone could have predicted this breakout until it happened. Even if Sue Bird knew Chen had the goods all the way back on draft night in 2020.

Still, watching her put defenders in a blender makes it a shame that we won't see Chennedy in the WNBA All-Star Game. Because her performance has certainly been worthy and there are very few players who are as exciting to watch. Regardless, Carter has certainly been playing at an All-Star level for Chicago. And it looks like the Sky are her team when she's got the rock in her hands. Much to the dismay of any opposing defender.
