Colt McCoy, who is competing to be Colin Kaepernick's backup in San Francisco, left Thursday's preseason game against the Broncos early with a shoulder injury. The 49ers say McCoy is doubtful to return.
McCoy was 3-for-7 with 41 yards and an interception.
A third-round pick out of Texas in 2010, McCoy started 21 games with the Browns, completing 58 percent of his passes with 21 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. Cleveland used a first-round pick on Brandon Weeden in 2012, effectively spelling the end of McCoy's time with the Browns. He was traded to San Francisco in April 2013.
McCoy is in a battle with Scott Tolzien for the backup gig, but most media reports have McCoy in the lead.
