Georgetown transfer Josh Smith was granted a waiver to play immediately by the NCAA and will have two seasons remaining of eligibility although he has played in parts of three different seasons, the school announced Wednesday.
Smith, a 6-foot-10 and 350 pound center, played two full seasons at UCLA, and then left that school after six games as a junior.
"We are excited that the NCAA has approved the waiver for Joshua," said Georgetown coach John Thompson III. "Now, he has to maintain a high level of commitment on and off the court. He will provide a significant low-post presence for this team."
Georgetown opens the season Nov. 8 against Oregon in Seoul, South Korea.
Thompson said that Smith will bring a lot to the table.
"A low-post presence, and that when he gets (the ball) down there, he knows what to do with it. He's very good on the blocks. He's a very good basketball player, which quite honestly I didn't realize until he got here last year - just what a good feel for the game he had," Thompson said.
