Free-agent starter Ervin Santana is looking for a contract that would pay him "more than $100 million" over five years, Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported Thursday. Free-agent right-hander Ricky Nolasco is seeking a contract in the neighborhood of $80 million over the same period, according to the report.
Rosenthal notes that neither player may get those desired contracts in a weak free agent market that opened earlier this week.
The 30-year-old Santana, who spent 2013 with the Kansas City Royals, is widely viewed as the best available free-agent starter. But his career ERA is only 4.19. He is also only one year removed from a season in which he went 9-13 with a 5.16 ERA with the Los Angeles Angels. Last season with the Royals, he went 9-10 with a 3.24 ERA and had 161 strikeouts in 211 innings pitched.
