Report: Yankees 'likely' to sign Brian Roberts

Still searching for infield depth after the loss of star second baseman Robinson Cano, the New York Yankees are "likely" to sign free-agent second baseman Brian Roberts, Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported late Monday night.

Earlier on Monday, CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reported that the Yankees had a trio of infielders on their radar — Roberts,  Mark Reynolds, and Michael Young.

Roberts, 36, played in 77 games with the Baltimore Orioles last season, batting .249 with eight homers, 39 RBI, and a .704 OPS. Roberts has been injury-prone later in his career, and he has played in just 192 total games over the past four seasons. He has spent his entire career to this point in Baltimore.

Reynolds, 30, played in 36 games with the Yankees last season, when he hit .236 with six homers, 19 RBI, and a .755 OPS. But he struck out 31 times in 110 at-bats.

And in 147 games with the Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers, Young hit .279 with eight homers, 46 RBI, and a .730 OPS.

As it stands, the Yankees plan to start the newly signed Kelly Johnson at second base, while Derek Jeter will play shortstop and Eduardo Nunez will man the hot corner at third base.
