NHL GMs considering 3-on-3 overtimes

NHL general managers begin their annual meetings in Boca Raton, Fla. on Monday, where they will discuss the possibility of a three-on-three overtime, according to TSN's Bob McKenzie.

Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland has proposed increasing the overtime from 5 to 8 minutes, with the first four minutes played four-on-four and the final four minutes played three-on-three in an effort to increase the number of games that are decided in overtime, rather than shootouts.

Glen Sather, the general manager of the New York Rangers, has said he opposes the 3-on-3 rule and calls its chances of passing a "pipe dream," according to Nick Cotsonika of Yahoo Sports.

Another new overtime rule being proposed is a switch to what is known as the "long change," in which each team has the goal which is furthest from their bench, as in the second period of each game. McKenzie reports that other leagues have seen a rise in extra time goals after instituting the rule.

The meetings will go until Tuesday and also include plans to discuss expanded video review in games, including the possibility of adding coach's challenges.

USHL had 23% of its games go to OT (roughly same as NHL). USHL went to long-change OT, settled 10 per cent more games with that one change.
