The New York Mets have released pitcher Kyle Farnsworth just one day after demoting him from his role as closer, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

Farnsworth recorded his third save of the season  Monday in a 9-7 win against the New York Yankees, but was informed on Tuesday that he was being demoted to a bullpen pitcher before being let go from the organization entirely on Wednesday night.

The 15-year veteran made 19 appearances for the Mets this year, chalking up 10 strikeouts while allowing six runs in 17.0 innings of work.
