Report: Lakers interviewed Byron Scott for head coaching job

Byron Scott could soon return to Los Angeles.

The former player with the showtime Lakers of the 1980s reportedly interviewed with Lakers front office executives on Tuesday for the coaching position left open by the departure of Mike D'Antoni, according to a tweet Wednesday night from Chris Broussard of ESPN. The report was also confirmed by Sam Amick of USA Today Sports.

The 53-year-old won three championships with the Lakers in the 1980s and was named coach of the year in 2008 when he was with New Orleans, then known as the Hornets. He spent four years with the Nets, then in New Jersey, from 2000-2004, twice leading the organization to the NBA Finals. He was a two-time coach of the All-Star team, once in 2002 with the East and again in 2008 with the West. His first coaching duties came as an assistant with the Sacramento Kings from 1998-2000. Most recently, he coached the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2010-2013.

Earlier on Wednesday, it was reported that the Lakers had met with former Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy about the open position. The Lakers have repeatedly said they will not consult Kobe Bryant regarding their search for a head coach.
