Former No. 1 quarterback recruit Jake Heaps will transfer to the University of Miami and will be eligible to play for the Hurricanes next season, he told Fox Sports' Bruce Feldman on Sunday.

Heaps, who made an official visit to Miami about six weeks ago, plans to be at the school later this month to begin competing for Miami's starting quarterback job next season.

"I'm extremely excited to join the Miami football program and to get down there and compete," Heaps told Feldman. "I really felt a good connection to (UM offensive coordinator) coach (James) Coley and coach (Al) Golden and the whole staff there."

Hurricanes coach Al Golden said in April that redshirt freshman Kevin Olsen was the favorite to start the team's season-opener against Louisville. But he added the team was "always looking" at the possibility of bringing on senior transfers, who are eligible to play immediately. Quarterback Ryan Williams, who was thought to be the front-runner, tore his ACL this spring and is attempting to return sometime this season.

Heaps was rated the Class of 2010's No. 1 quarterback prospect by several recruiting services. He began his career at Brigham Young before transferring to Kansas, where he often struggled in his only season as the team's starter.

Heaps completed just 49 percent of his passes last season, throwing eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He lost the starting job to sophomore Montell Cozart in the spring.
