Katlego Mphela tacked on a second South Africa goal 17 minutes later. Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira changed his formation and put two strikers up front, and it led to an offensive blitz from Bafana Bafana. South Africa had 21 shots in the match, 10 of which were on goal.

Mexico was held in check for most of the match, only mustering two shots on goal. Its best scoring opportunity came in the 22nd minute, when Andres Guardado's 30-yard strike hit the crossbar.

Park Chu-young gave South Korea a 2-1 lead in the 49th minute, bending the ball into the goal on a free kick. Chu-young is just the fifth player in history to score a goal and an own goal in the same World Cup (he put one into his own net against Argentina on June 17).

Ayegbeni Yakubu knotted the match at 2-2 with a penalty kick in the 69th minute, but it would not be enough for Nigeria to advance out of group play. South Korea advanced to the World Cup's knockout round for only the second time, the other time coming when it was co-host of the tournament in 2002.

Argentina's Martin Palermo put the game out of reach in the 88th minute, putting in a rebound for a 2-0 lead. After his goal, Palermo celebrated with his teammates, tears coming to his eyes.

Lionel Messi's shot that bounced off Greece's goalkeeper Alexandros Tzorvas helped lead to an easy rebound and score for Palermo. Messi, 22, had on the captain's armband Tuesday, making him the youngest captain in Argentina's history.
