Brazil struck first when Robinho snuck in behind the Dutch defense and sent home a right footed strike to put his team ahead 1-0.

Netherlands goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg timed his leap perfectly to knock away a shot from Kaka that was destined for glory in the upper right hand corner. The save kept the Brazilian lead at 1-0.

Wesley Sneijder (10) reacted beautifully to a corner kick that was re-directed by Dirk Kuyt and sent the ball into the back of the net for the game winning goal.

Felipe Melo, who scored an own goal to give the Dutch their equalizer, was given a straight red card for stomping on the back of Arjen Robben's leg in the 73rd minute. Brazil's chances of a late comeback were severely hampered by going a man down so late in the contest.

Right before halftime, Sulley Muntari put Ghana ahead with a long, curving shot from 39 yards out that found the back of the net. At 39 yards out, the goal was the second longest of the 2010 World Cup.

Uruguay's star striker Luis Suarez was a hero of sorts as he ended up saving his team from a defeat at the end of extra time with a blatant and deliberate handball on the goal line.

The heartbreak for Ghana commenced as Asamoah Gyan had a chance to put his squad through to the semifinals but missed a penalty shot at the end of extra time. As he watched his shot bounce high off the crossbar, Gyan welled up. Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera kissed the crossbar in a show of gratitude.

With a chance to put his team through, Sebastian Abreu buried a kick to give Uruguay the deciding 4-2 edge in penalty kicks. As Ghana's goalkeeper Richard Kingson dove to his right, Abreu chipped the ball right into the middle of the net.
