Mattocks sounds off on Whitecaps, lackluster season

If there's one thing that can be said about second-year Vancouver Whitecaps forward Darren Mattocks, it's that he has no problem speaking his mind.

Mattocks, who has started to work his way into the Jamaican national team set-up, is a showman (ahem,  target="_blank">watch this), and he carries himself as such with his play on the field and comments off of it. His most recent comments may not go over so well with the powers that be at BC Place, though. In an appearance on Football GPS on CVM Television in his native Jamaica, Mattocks went to town on the Whitecaps and ousted manager Martin Rennie and opened up on his season with a lengthy interview that is certain to entertain, if not rub some colleagues the wrong way.

Much was expected out of Mattocks in 2013. On the heels of a stellar rookie season, one in which he scored seven goals in 21 games, Mattocks appeared primed for a breakout campaign. Instead, he struggled to score, tallying just three times. He struggled to stay on the field and beat out teammates for playing time, as he was limited to just nine starts, which was a byproduct of him struggling to win Rennie's favor.

Regardless of whether the forum was appropriate, Mattocks vented his frustration publicly as a result. The video in its entirety can be seen here, but here are some of the highlights:

Mattocks, who scored for the Whitecaps in the playoffs in the wild card game against eventual champion LA last season, claimed for all to "read between the lines" as to why Vancouver is not currently in the playoffs and how that may be correlated to his dip in playing time.

He claimed that Vancouver prevented him from making a move to a team in England interested in his services, and also claimed that "I lead the generation" of young, up-and-coming talent in MLS, while wrongfully stating that he was the league's Rookie of the Year in 2012 (it was, in fact, Chicago Fire defender Austin Berry).

Asked point-blank about Jamaican federation president Captain Horace Burrell's assertion that Mattocks was a bit of a "problem child," he flatly denied having an attitude problem, before opening up on his feud with Rennie.

And he managed to include the notion that if he said he'd want to go back to Vancouver next season, "I'd be lying."
