Aron Johannsson continues to try and pull off his best Jozy Altidore impression at AZ Alkmaar.
Filling the shoes of his departed U.S. international teammate, Johannsson tallied his 16th and 17th goals in all competitions Wednesday, helping lead AZ to a 2-2 (7-6 in penalties) Dutch Cup win over Heerenveen and a place in the quarterfinals as it defends its title.
Altidore scored eight goals in six Dutch Cup games last season in leading AZ to the trophy, and Johannsson is picking up where Altidore left off. He followed up his hat trick in AZ's second-round game against Sparta Rotterdam with Wednesday's double. First he cleaned up a rebound off a shot by Nemanja Gudelj in the 19th minute and finished into an empty net to pull AZ level. He scored a go-ahead goal in stoppage time of the first half of extra time, bodying off a defender to latch onto a squared header in the center of the box and finishing with ease. He also opened the round of penalties with a successful conversion, and goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado made the game-winning save as AZ advanced.
Johannsson is now more than halfway to matching Altidore's single-season record for goals by an American abroad (31), which was set last season.
