U.S. national team defenders have long been wary of what June 22 World Cup foe Cristiano Ronaldo is capable of doing, but in case they were in need of a reminder, the Portugal and Real Madrid star provided one on Wednesday.
Ronaldo, in addition to two back-heel assists to Karim Benzema, put Schalke's Joel Matip on the wrong side of the highlight reel, abusing the defender with his trademark stepovers before blasting home the third goal with his left foot in Real Madrid's 6-1 rout of its overmatched German opponent. He capped Madrid's scoring with his second of the day as well, before one-time Madrid forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaar provided a sliver of consolation with a goal of his own.
Ronaldo, the reigning FIFA Ballon d'Or winner, passed Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the lead in Champions League goals this season and now has 11 goals in six matches in the competition.
