Landon Donovan vs. Scotland

Landon Donovan's abrupt dismissal from World Cup camp, along with six others on Thursday, sent shockwaves through the U.S. soccer community, given his stature and career resume, and while plenty will be discussed in the coming days, weeks and months regarding his omission, the fact is, he will not be playing in a fourth World Cup.

Donovan has stayed away from social media for the most part in recent years, but he took to Facebook to release a statement expressing his disappointment. He writes:

To my fans,

It has been an honor and privilege to have represented the US National Team in three World Cups. I was looking forward to playing in Brazil and, as you can imagine, I am very disappointed with today’s decision. Regardless, I will be cheering on my friends and teammates this summer, and I remain committed to helping grow soccer in the US in the years to come.

Thanks for all your support,

Landon
