Mexico vs. Netherlands sets new Univision viewership record

The dramatic round of 16 match between the Netherlands and Mexico — the Dutch scored two late goals to break the hearts of El Tri fans everywhere, winning 2-1 on Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's stoppage-time penalty kick — was the most watched soccer match in Univision's network history, as well as the most-watched program ever for a U.S.-based Spanish language broadcaster.

Univision said the match drew an average of 10.4 million total viewers, topping the previous record of 9.4 million viewers who watched Argentina defeat Mexico in the 2010 World Cup round of 16. It also topped the 2007 final episode of the telenovela “Destilando Amor" which attracted nearly 9 million viewers. With the 2010 World Cup final between Spain and the Netherlands drawing 8.8 million viewers on Univision, three of the top four broadcasts in Univision history are soccer matches.
Through 50 games, Univision said its top-rated markets for the World Cup were Miami followed by Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas, New York, Phoenix, Chicago, San Francisco and Sacramento. The network's coverage of Mexico-Netherlands topped ESPN's coverage of the same match by 57 percent (6.6 million viewers).
