U.S. international defender Tim Ream is staying put after signing a three-year contract extension with second-tier English club Bolton.

Ream, who moved to Bolton from the New York Red Bulls in January 2012, is coming off a season in which he was named both the club's and club's supporters' player of the year. His new deal, which required he be granted another work permit, runs through the 2016-17 season.

“I’m really pleased to have extended my deal here,” Ream told the club's official website. “I certainly feel like I’ve developed as a player during my time over here and with my family we’re settled in the local area.”

Ream, 26, was not among the 30 players initially called into pre-World Cup camp by Jurgen Klinsmann despite his strong season. He had been called into the USA's friendly against Ukraine in March, but he withdrew from the opportunity, reportedly due to the birth of his child. 

Ream displayed versatility for Bolton in helping the club stay in the League Championship last season, playing every position across the back line and central midfield.

His signing is the latest in a busy spell for Americans based abroad. U.S. forward Terrence Boyd moved from Rapid Vienna to 2. Bundesliga club Red Bull Leipzig; 21-year-old winger Joe Gyau moved from Hoffenheim to Bundesliga power Borussia Dortmund, where he will start with the club's U-23 team; and Freddy Adu is on trial at AZ Alkmaar, where he'll hope to earn a contract to team with U.S. forward Aron Johannsson. 

Bolton had also recently announced that U.S. midfielder Stuart Holden, out of contract, would remain with the club while he attempts to return from his latest long-term knee injury.
