Freddy Adu won't be winding up at AZ Alkmaar after all.

A week after going on trial at the club that currently employs U.S. international forward Aron Johannsson, Adu's trial has ended without a contract offer, the Dutch club announced on Sunday.

U.S. defender Tim Ream signs three-year contract extension with Bolton

Adu has been out of contract since December, when he ended a stint with Brazilian club Bahia. He had trained with Bob Bradley's Stabaek in Norway prior to his most recent trial, but was evidently unable to impress manager Marco van Basten in the time allotted. Adu had started and played a half in AZ's 3-1 friendly win over lower-tier AFC '34, helping set up Muamer Tankovic for a goal, according to an AZ game report.

The development leaves the 25-year-old Adu on the contract path yet again as he looks to find a landing place to recapture the form that brought him back into the U.S. national team picture in 2011. After a successful stint with Caykur Rizespor in Turkey's second division, Bradley recalled him for the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup, and he performed well, eventually returning to MLS with the Philadelphia Union.

Adu played for the USA's U-23 team that was unable to qualify for the 2012 Olympics and then was involved in a swap with Bahia which brought Brazil World Cup winner Kleberson to the Union. Despite training with Blackpool in the spring and then Bradley's club prior to the AZ trial, Adu has been unable to secure a club deal in the last seven months. The hope was that AZ, for whom former U.S. international Earnie Stewart is the technical director and where Jozy Altidore resurrected his club career with 50 goals in two seasons, would be the re-launching point for Adu's career.
