Sunderland finished in 14th place last season in the Barclays Premier League. They were led in goals by Adam Johnson, who had eight, and Fabio Borini, who had seven.

Over the offseason, Gus Poyet signed a new two-year deal to stay on as manager. The team also signed midfielder Jack Rodwell to five-year deal.

American Jozy Altidore's first year at the club was disappointing, as the striker only scored one goal last season. Altidore returns to the club this year hoping to look more like the player who scored 38 goals in 67 appearances with AZ Alkmaar.
