Gerardo Martino named new coach of Argentina national team

Gerardo Martino has been named the new coach of the Argentina national team, the Argentine Football Association announced Tuesday. Martino takes over for Alejandro Sabella, who stepped down from the position after the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Martino takes over for Alejandro Sabella, who stepped down from the position after the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, which saw Argentina lose in the final to Germany. 

Martino most recently coached FC Barcelona, a position he held for the 2013-14 season before resigning in May. He coached the Paraguay national team during the 2010 World Cup, where they reached the quarterfinals before bowing out to eventual-champion Spain.

The 51-year-old is from Rosario, Argentina. As a player, he played for Argentina's national team. 

Argentina's next major tournament is the 2015 Copa America in Chile, which they begin preparing for with a friendly against Germany on Sept. 3.
