Bento and Portugal were eliminated from the 2014 World Cup in the group stage. He took over as manager in 2010, and his contract continued through April 2016.
The Portuguese Football Federation released a statement thanking Bento for his contributions to the team.
Portugal's next match is Oct. 11 against France.
