Bradley Wright-Phillips ties single-season MLS scoring record

New York Red Bulls star Bradley Wright-Phillips tied the MLS single-season goal-scoring record Sunday night, scoring two goals in New York's final regular-season game.

New York Red Bulls forward Bradley Wright-Phillips tied the MLS single-season goal-scoring record Sunday night, scoring a brace in New York's final regular-season game. 

Wright-Phillips scored in the 15th minute, his 26th of the season, in the Red Bulls' 2-0 win over Sporting Kansas City and added the record-tying 27th goal in the 70th minute. He had a chance to break the record in the 83rd minute, but his shot at the bottom-left corner of the goal was saved. Wright-Phillips ties the record held by the San Jose Earthquakes' Chris Wondolowski (2012) and the former Tampa Bay Mutiny's Roy Lassiter (1996).

He had to earn No. 27. Wright-Phillips beat and fought off a defender for the ball, then dribbled across the box before firing back across and beating Eric Kronberg in the bottom-left corner of the goal. With the win, New York finishes the campaign in fourth place in the Eastern Conference and will host fifth-place Sporting Kansas City on Thursday in the first round of the MLS playoffs.
