Sporting KC signs leading scorer Dom Dwyer to contract extension

Sporting Kansas City has signed forward Dom Dwyer to a contract extension. The team did not disclose the terms of the contract. Sam McDowell of the Kansas City Star reports that the extension is for multiple years and will give Dwyer a "significant raise" over the $92,500 he made this season.

Sporting KC CEO Robb Heineman said on Twitter Saturday that Dwyer will be in Kansas City for at least three more seasons.

"Dom’s new contract is well-deserved. I am very happy for him and for the club to have reached this deal,” Sporting KC manager Peter Vermes said in a statement. "He has performed at a very high level on a consistent basis and this contract again shows a strong commitment to keeping players of his caliber in Kansas City."

Dwyer played in 33 MLS games for Kansas City this season and scored 22 goals, a club record and the second-most in the league in 2014. Dwyer had only two goals in 17 career games before this season. 

Sporting KC finished in fifth place in the Western Conference with a 14-7-13 record before losing to the New York Red Bulls in the knockout round.
