The Montreal Impact went back to the MLS Re-Entry Draft well Thursday, taking veteran center back Bakary Soumare with the first pick in the second phase of the offseason player movement mechanism. The Impact, who finished last in MLS with 28 points in 2014, had taken former Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper Erik Kronberg in the first phase last week.

Soumare is reunited with Montreal manager Frank Klopas, under whom he played with the Chicago Fire. In his first stint with the Fire, Soumare was a Best XI defender, in 2008.

He left the league for options abroad before returning with the Philadelphia Union in 2012. He played sparingly for the Union before ultimately returning to Chicago and playing 48 games (47 starts) over the last two seasons.

Another veteran defender on the move is Marvell Wynne, with the speedy right back/center back being selected by the San Jose Earthquakes. San Jose, which opens the new Avaya Stadium in 2015, also picked veteran winger Sanna Nyassi, making two of the eight overall selections in the second phase of the draft.

As Thierry Henry evolved, he never lost the grace that defined his career

Three players – Robbie Findley (Toronto FC), Kronberg (Impact) and Andy Gruenebaum (San Jose Earthquakes) – were taken in the first phase, in which existing player contract options must be picked up by the selecting teams. In the second phase, teams are required to make bona fide offers to players, but can sign for different contract terms. If players don't sign, their MLS rights still belong to the selecting team, pending any changes in the new collective bargaining agreement.

The likes of 100-plus-goal scorers Edson Buddle and Dwayne De Rosario were available Thursday, as were veteran left back Gonzalo Segares, veteran goalkeeper Troy Perkins and former U.S. national team player Bobby Convey. All of the players not selected (full list of draft-eligible players can be seen here) now become free agents and can sign with any club.
