Toronto FC has hired Robin Fraser as an assistant coach, the team announced Thursday. 

Fraser had spent the last two seasons with the New York Red Bulls as an assistant under Mike Petke, who was fired Wednesday. 

“We are very excited to have Robin on board," Toronto FC head coach Greg Vanney said in a statement. "His experience in Major League Soccer and respect in our league will be of great benefit to Toronto FC. Robin will be a great asset both on-and-off the field for our club."

Fraser, a former defender for the Los Angeles Galaxy, Colorado Rapids and Columbus Crew, got his coaching career started as an assistant for Real Salt Lake. He was on the coaching staff when the club won the MLS Cup in 2009. 

In 2011, Fraser became the head coach of Chivas USA and compiled a 15-32-21 record in two seasons.

"I'm thrilled to be joining the tremendous staff at TFC, and I am looking forward to contributing to what I am convinced will be a very successful project," Fraser said in a statement. "I would like to thank Greg and Tim Bezbatchenko for the opportunity to be a part of their vision."
