The penalty shootout, which lasted 11 rounds, ended when Ivory Coast goalkeeper Boubacar Barry converted after saving a penalty from Ghanian goalkeeper Brimah Razak. Ivory Coast won the shootout 9-8. 

Ivory Coast, which last won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1992, lost the 2012 tournament final to Zambia 8-7 in penalties. The Ivorians also fell to Egypt in the 2006 final on penalties. 

The 1992 Africa Cup of Nations final was also decided in a penalty shootout, in which Ivory Coast topped Ghana 11-10.
