Jermaine Jones to miss 4-6 weeks after hernia surgery

New England Revolution midfielder Jermaine Jones will be out four to six weeks after undergoing sports hernia surgery on Monday, the club announced on Tuesday.

New England Revolution midfielder Jermaine Jones will be out four to six weeks after undergoing sports hernia surgery on Monday, the club announced on Tuesday. 

Jones disclosed that he would be having surgery in an Instagram video on Monday without specifying the injury. In the video, he said he would be out for "a couple of weeks."

On Sunday, Jones played the full 90 minutes in the U.S. men's national team's 2-0 win over Panama in Los Angeles. He also logged a full game in the USMNT's 3-2 loss to Chile on Jan. 29.

The Revolution are in preseason training in Foxborough, Mass., after concluding a two-week camp in Arizona last week. New England opens the MLS campaign March 8 against the Sounders in Seattle.

Jones came to the Revolution in August following a 10-game stint with Turkish side Besiktas. He scored two goals in 10 regular-season games for the Revs before helping New England reach the MLS Cup Final against the LA Galaxy, where they dropped a 2-1 decision in overtime.

Jones spent the first 16 years of his professional career in Germany, aside from a 2011 loan to England’s Blackburn Rovers, including playing in 129 Bundesliga matches for Schalke 04 from 2007-14.

His move to the Revolution in August came as a designated player and his rights were awarded to New England in a blind draw with the Chicago Fire. He is the fourth DP in Revs’ history.
