Cagliari fires manager Gianfranco Zola after 11 matches; Rehires Zeman
CAGLIARI, Italy (AP) — Cagaliari has fired Gianfranco Zola as coach after less than three months in charge and rehired Zdenek Zeman, with the Serie A club battling against relegation.
A Cagliari statement says it is "a decision taken reluctantly regarding a great man who has written unforgettable pages in Cagliari's history, giving eminence and international prestige to Sardinia."
The 48-year-old Zola, who ended his playing career at Cagliari in 2005, replaced the 67-year-old Zeman at the end of December but managed to steer the club to only two wins in 11 matches, losing seven times.
Saturday's 2-0 loss at Sampdoria was Cagliari's third straight and left it in 18th place, four points from safety.
It is the sixth coaching change in Serie A this season.
