Sunderland forward Jermain Defoe hammered home a wicked volley on Sunday just before halftime to give the Black Cats a 1-0 lead over Newcastle.

The ball popped up for Defoe about 25 yards from net, and the 32-year-old made no mistake about it, firing a healthy left-footed one-timer into the top right corner. The goal was the third of the season for Defoe and gave Sunderland, which is fighting off relegation, a lead at the break.
