Veteran U.S. center back Oguchi Onyewu is without a club, but, for at least the next two weeks, he'll be training with New York City FC.

Onyewu's time with Charlton Athletic came to an end, and the 33-year-old is now a free agent, able to sign outside of the transfer window. NYCFC tweeted a photo of Onyewu in uniform during training on Tuesday. Defense is one of the MLS expansion club's need areas, as its 16 goals conceded are tied for second most in the league.

According to SI's Grant Wahl, Onyewu is on a two-week trial with the club.

He is not on the league's fixed list of players subjected to the allocation order, so he if he were to sign with the league, it'd be through the discovery process. If NYCFC does not have discovery priority on Onyewu, it could pay the $50,000 fee to the club that does in order to secure his rights. All of this is assuming Onyewu, who has avoided signing with MLS in the past to remain in Europe, is on board with coming stateside.

He trained with D.C. United last season only to return abroad.

Onyewu has had stints with multiple teams in Europe, including Metz, Standard Liege, Newcastle, AC Milan, FC Twente, Sporting Lisbon, Malaga, Queens Park Rangers, Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton.

He last played for the U.S. in a March 2014 friendly against Ukraine and was not part of Jurgen Klinsmann's 30-man preliminary roster for the 2014 World Cup.
