FIFA Executive Committee to meet in July to discuss special election

The special election will take place between December 2015 and February 2016.

FIFA announced Thursday that its Executive Committee will meet on July 20 in Zurich to set the date for the organization's special election to replace president Sepp Blatter. 

Earlier this month, Blatter said that he would resign amid a corruption scandal engulfing FIFA. In its announcement on Thursday, FIFA said that an extraordinary FIFA Congress to elect Blatter's replacement would take place in Zurich between December 2015 and February 2016. 

The Executive Committee will be charged with setting the exact date of the special election. ExCo will also discuss reforming FIFA's organizational structure, according to FIFA's agenda for the July meeting. 

Last month, the U.S. Department of Justice charged 14 soccer officials and business associates with a variety of corruption charges stemming from $150 million in alleged bribes. Swiss authorities also opened separate criminal proceedings into the bid process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

Blatter was reelected for a fifth term as FIFA's president just days after the indictments, but the following week, he announced his intention to resign from the position. 

Earlier this week, FIFA postponed the bid process for the 2026 World Cup in light of ongoing investigations by Swiss authorities and the FBI into the bid processes for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. The 1998, 2006, 2010, 2018 and 2022 World Cup bid processes have recently been linked to various allegations of wrongdoing.
