USA-Mexico CONCACAF playoff match to be held Oct. 9 at Rose Bowl

The winner will advance to the 2017 Confederations Cup.

The United States and Mexico will meet on Oct. 9 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., to determine which team will advance to the 2017 Confederations Cup, CONCACAF announced Sunday. 

The one-game playoff was made necessary when Mexico won the 2015 Gold Cup. Had the U.S. won the tournament, Jurgen Klinsmann's side would have automatically advanced to the Confederations Cup. 

Mexico defeated Jamaica 3-1 in Sunday's Gold Cup Final in Philadelphia. The United States crashed out of the tournament in the semifinals, falling 2-1 to Jamaica in Atlanta. 

The U.S. failed to place at the Gold Cup, losing to Panama on penalties in Saturday's third-place game. 

Mexico represented CONCACAF at the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil. The United States earned CONCACAF's Confederations Cup place at the 2009 tournament in South Africa.
