As if scoring five goals in his last game wasn't enough, Cristiano Ronaldo has seized control of the all-time Champions League goal record with a hat trick.

Ronaldo added three more goals to his career tally on Tuesday, netting two penalties and a rebound header as part of Real Madrid's 4-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk to open Group A play. Ronaldo now has 80 goals, three more than Barcelona rival Lionel Messi, who takes to the field against Roma on Wednesday.

Ronaldo scored five goals against Espanyol on Saturday to bust out of a "slump," as he had yet to score in Real Madrid's opening two games of the La Liga season.

On Tuesday, a pair of handballs gifted Ronaldo his first two goals in the 55th and 63rd minutes, before he scored in the run of play in the 81st. Marcelo's long-range blast was parried away, and Ronaldo was in the right place to get his head to the rebound.
