Jordan Morris, Stanford beat No. 1 Wake Forest to reach College Cup

Jordan Morris and Stanford reached the College Cup, beating No. 1 Wake Forest in extra time on Saturday.

U.S. men's national team forward Jordan Morris passed up professional opportunities to play his junior season at Stanford, and he's made the most of it with his Cardinal teammates.

Morris and Stanford took down top-seeded Wake Forest Saturday night 2-1 in extra time to reach the College Cup, NCAA soccer's final four. Morris and Wake Forest's Ian Harkes–son of former U.S. forward John Harkes–scored in regulation before Foster Langsdorf scored on a header in the 97th minute to secure Stanford's place in the national semifinals for the first time since 2002. Minutes earlier, Stanford's Brandon Vincent had hit the crossbar on a penalty kick after he was taken down in the area. 

Eighth-seeded Stanford will play No. 4 Akron in one semifinal, while No. 2 Clemson and No. 6 Syracuse tussle in the all-orange other semifinal. Both games and the championship match will be held next weekend at Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas, with the semifinals on Friday and title game on Sunday.

For Morris, who has made the 15-player shortlist for the Hermann Trophy as the nation's top player, the goal was his 11th in 16 games for Stanford this season. He and Langsdorf were set up by U.S. youth midfielder Corey Baird, who has 11 assists on the season.

The Seattle Sounders have confirmed that they've offered Morris a record amount for a Homegrown Player signing, and whether he accepts that and jumps to MLS next season will be known soon enough. In the meantime, Morris has unfinished NCAA business to handle, facing an Akron side looking for its second title since 2010, when current Portland Timbers manager Caleb Porter was the Zips' coach.
