A class-action lawsuit has been filed on behalf of fans who purchased tickets for last weekend’s U.S. women’s national team match in Hawaii that was canceled due to poor field conditions, according to HawaiiNewsNow.
Two lawyers have filed the suit on behalf of two fans from Hawaii that purchased a total of six tickets to the game. The suit names U.S. Soccer and Aloha Stadium as defendants. Fans will be able to receive refunds on their tickets from U.S. Soccer, but the lawyers argue that fans from other Hawaiian islands and the mainland incurred additional losses on travel and lodging.
The match, scheduled for Sunday, was canceled after players complained about the state of the artificial turf in Aloha Stadium. Midfielder Megan Rapinoe tore her ACL turning a training session on a different field two days earlier.
• Sunil Gulati: Canceled match “black eye for this organization”
“We had a series of mistakes involving this game,” US Soccer president Sunil Gulati told The New York Times. “We screwed up. It won’t happen again.”
Aloha Stadium will also host a college football bowl game on Christmas Eve and the NFL Pro Bowl in January.
