Seattle Sounders forward Obafemi Martins is leaving the team to join Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua in a multi-million dollar deal, according toBBC Sport.

The terms of Martins’s contract with the Chinese side have not yet been released.

What does transfer splash do for China's aspirations on global scale?

The move also opens a Designated Player spot on Seattle’s roster, allowing the team to move for a high-profile player should they wish.

The Nigerian striker had been among the Sounders’ most dangerous weapons during his tenure with the club. He scored 40 goals with 23 assists during 72 MLS regular season games.

Martins, 31, joins former New York Red Bulls DP Tim Cahill on the Shanghai roster. The club also recently signed Senegalese striker Demba Ba away from Besiktas.

Other big signings by the Super League in 2016 include Columbian striker Jackson Martinez (Guangzhou Evergrande) and Ivorian forward Gervinho (Hebei China Fortune), among others.
