Soccer legend Johan Cruyff has died of lung cancer at the age of 68, his official website announced Thursday morning.

“On March 24 2016 Johan Cruyff (68) died peacefully in Barcelona, surrounded by his family after a hard fought battle with cancer,” the statement said. “It’s with great sadness that we ask you to respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”

Cruyff was a three-time Ballon d’Or winner and won three straight European Cups with Ajax. He also played for the Dutch national team and Barcelona, which he later managed to its first European Cup victory in 1992.

Cruyff retired from soccer in 1978, and was diagnosed with cancer in October of last year.

The Netherlands and France will reportedly hold a moment of silence in the 14th minute of their friendly on Friday. Cruyff wore the No. 14.
