Middlesbrough's late equalizer holds Manchester City to draw

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Marten de Roonheaded a late equalizer as Middlesbrough snatched a 1-1 draw against Manchester City in the English Premier League on Saturday.
Sergio Aguero's 150th City goal just before halftime looked like earning the hosts another three points but Pep Guardiola's team paid the price for failing to kill off the game.
City had 18 shots to Middlesbrough's none in the first half but the team's intensity dropped after the break and it was caught out when De Roon headed in Stewart Downing's cross in stoppage time.
Before that, Boro created few clear-cut opportunities but it was never out of the game as the effort required to beat Barcelona on Tuesday caught up with City.
That seemed the case early on as City, which apparently rested Raheem Sterling, made a sluggish start. But with Boro having arrived seemingly expecting an onslaught and setting up accordingly, often with 10 men in the box, allowed City to take charge.

The host dominated possession and the chances eventually began to come in waves. Kevin De Bruyne had a free kick blocked, Fernandinho fired a shot wide, and Ilkay Gundogan failed to find the target after a good break down the right.
Boro goalkeeper Victor Valdes was first called into action to deal with a long-range effort from Aleksandar Kolarov before De Bruyne shot across the face of goal. Valdes then denied Aguero after a clever backheel from Silva, who was ruled offside as he attempted to pounce on the rebound.
After Aguero put another attempt wide, the breakthrough finally came just before the interval. Boro again had players back in numbers but that did not prevent De Bruyne from curling in an inch-perfect ball into the box for Aguero to clip home first time from six yards.
Jesus Navas almost added an immediate second, striking the outside of the post.

There was alarm as Fernandinho lost possession on halfway and Boro broke but Downing drilled a shot across goal. Alvaro Negredo, facing former club City, also got clear down the right and fired in a dangerous low cross but John Stones just beat Forshaw to the ball.
Aguero should have made it 2-0 when he was picked out in the area by Navas five minutes from time but, despite having time to line up his shot, fired over.
That was a major let-off for Boro and it took advantage as Downing curled in a superb cross and De Roon made a perfect run to head home at the back post. It was too late for City to respond and two points were dropped.

West Ham 1, Stoke 1
LONDON (AP) — West Ham continued its unstable start to life at the London Stadium as Stoke came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw in the Premier League on Saturday.
Crowd trouble has marred the club's move to the 2012 Olympic venue, but it was on-field problems that left home fans frustrated this time.
Extra security measures contained any drama off the field, but the visitors' resilience ensured it wasn't a perfect afternoon for West Ham.
Michail Antonio looked to have set Slaven Bilic's side on its way to victory as he headed Dimitri Payet's cross in the 65th, with the ball hitting Stoke's Glenn Whelanbefore going into the net.
But a goalkeeping error from Adrian allowed Stoke back into the game just 10 minutes later.
The West Ham stopper came needlessly charging off his line, allowing Jonathan Walters to center for Bojan Krkic to volley into an empty net.

In a first half almost completely devoid of goalmouth action, West Ham came closest as Angelo Ogbonna's header from Payet's corner was well saved by Lee Grant, before Payet came close with a free kick on the stroke of halftime.
Stoke could be forgiven for its limited production in attack, with chief creators Marko Arnautovic and Xherdan Shaqiri absent through suspension and injury.
Bilic pushed Antonio into a more advanced position as he introduced Edimilson Fernandes and Ashley Fletcher and was rewarded just three minutes later as Payet picked out Antonio.
Mark Hughes responded by introducing Peter Crouch and Bojan and it took the Spanish forward just four minutes to make an impact, as his neat finish claimed a point for his side.
The result saw both sides climb one position in the Premier League, with West Ham now 16th and Stoke 11th after winning its previous three league games. Both sides could drop lower depending on Sunday's results.
Sunderland 2, Bournemouth 1
BOURNEMOUTH, England (AP) — Victor Anichebeinspired bottom-place Sunderland to its first success in the English Premier League, scoring the opener and winning a penalty in a 2-1 victory over Bournemouth on Saturday.
Anichebe, whose only notable contribution this term had been a Twitter gaffe after the recent defeat at West Ham, was handed a first league start by under-pressure manager David Moyes.
And the striker responded with his first goal in 18 months, to cancel out Dan Gosling's opener, before winning the penalty which Jermain Defoe dispatched to seal a 2-1 victory.
The win was all the more remarkable given Sunderland's Steven Pienaar was sent off with half an hour to go for a challenge on Junior Stanislas.

Burnley 3, Crystal Palace 2
BURNLEY, England (AP) — Ashley Barnes pounced four minutes into stoppage time to give Burnley a 3-2 victory over Crystal Palace, lifting the promoted club to ninth in the English Premier League on Saturday.
Burnley threw away a two-goal lead before the substitute Barnes netted the winner after meeting a cross from Johann Gudmundsson.
Sam Vokes put Burnley ahead inside two minutes and Berg Gudmundsson doubled the lead in the 14th.
Connor Wickham reduced the deficit with his first touch after replacing Jason Puncheon on the hour, and Christian Benteke looked to have sealed the comeback.
But Barnes completed the second straight Turf Moor late show for Sean Dyche's side after Scott Arfield struck a last-minute winner against Everton two weeks ago.
Palace was condemned to a fourth straight loss.
