PHOTOS: Nike Pay Tribute to Iconic Boots Worn by Ronaldo With New Mercurial Puro Fenomeno
Nike have launched the new Mercurial Puro Fenomeno to pay tribute to the original Mercurials worn by Brazilian legend Ronaldo, one of the most iconic pairs of boots in football history.
'R9' - O Fenômeno - debuted the originals back in 1998, and fellow countryman Neymar will now take on the mantle by wearing the Mercurial Puro Fenomeno.
With Neymar equally deep rooted in Nike history, the newest boots not only draw inspiration from Ronaldo's Mercurials, but also the Mercurial Superfly II worn by Brazil's current superstar and captain on his international debut in 2010.
The iconic blue and chrome colours return from the '98 Mercurial, as does the wave pattern.
Ronaldo, who describes the '98 Mercurial boots he wore as having 'changed the game', couldn't be happier that a player like Neymar is following in his footsteps.
"I feel a connection with Neymar," the retired hero told Nike.com.
"He's a sensational young man, very balanced, focused, already following a great path. I believe the most important thing is to never ever lose the focus on being happy playing football; that's how he makes many more people happy - watching him play."
Neymar himself commented, "He is one of my idols. Ronaldo is one of the greatest and most iconic players in history. I'm really happy and honoured to have played with him on the Brazilian National Team."
The new Nike Mercurial Puro Fenomeno will be available 21st December on nike.com.
