Mexico’s long wait to begin their run in the inaugural CONCACAF Nations League is almost over, and El Tri travels to face Bermuda on Friday in what will be their maiden fixture.

Both teams were drawn in Group 1B (Group B in League A), and Mexico has an opportunity to instantly take a share of the lead in its pool while Bermuda could clear as leaders.

The Gombey Warriors have beaten Mexico three times in 12 meetings, but there’s little relevant form to go off between these teams considering they last clashed in 1987 in a 6-0 win for Mexico.

The race to win Group 1B looks tight after Bermuda and Panama each notched victories over one another away from home. Mexico begins its tournament on Friday and could quickly move three points clear if its win the opener before getting the better of Panama on Tuesday.

The defending Gold Cup champions would be considered rampant favorites to win its pool and likely with a perfect record—but Gerardo Martino will be wary of falling complacent. The odds for Friday’s fixture look particularly strong when taking into account Bermuda lost 4-1 in its only other home game in the group so far.

The Mexico boss has brought a number of his European-based assets into the squad for this clash. Those include Napoli winger Hirving Lozano, Atletico Madrid’s Hector Herrera, Diego Lainez of Real Betis and Porto forward Jesus Corona.

Bermuda are 4-4 in 2019 thus far, but Panama’s 4-1 humiliation in September was the only one of those defeats suffered at home. The club has since clinched revenge to draw level as leaders in its Nations League pool, but the arrival of Mexico brings a sense the elders have arrived to assert some discipline.
