Ajax has enjoyed pristine progress in Champions League Group H so far this season, but a visit from Frank Lampard's Chelsea on Wednesday threatens to interrupt its march on first place. Last season's Champions League semi-finalists are yet to lose this season, but Chelsea's confidence is riding high on the back of a five-win streak that could trouble the Godenzonen.

A dramatic 3–2 semifinal loss to Tottenham Hotspur in May was Ajax's last competitive defeat, having since gone unbeaten 18 matches in a row and winning five straight.

Chelsea is already at a disadvantage in Group H after it lost 1–0 at home to Valencia on Matchday 1. That puts the West Londoners—three points behind leaders Ajax—in a sticky spot regarding their head-to-head record against Los Che should they finish level on points.

Those circumstances mean the upcoming result against Ajax is all the more important for Chelsea, who edged Newcastle United 1–0 on Saturday thanks to Marcos Alonso's late intervention. They responded well to the opening defeat against Valencia and won 2–1 at Lille on Matchday 2, though Ajax is a different prospect altogether.

To put the capabilities of the Dutch into context, they thrashed Valencia, 3–0, away in its last Champions League outing. It was a replica of the team's opening day win over Lille. Ten Hag's men got a 2–1 win away at RKC Waalwijk on Saturday, ending a run of four consecutive clean sheets. Creative stars Hakim Ziyech, Dusan Tadic and Donny van de Beek have already been in hot form for Ajax this season, meaning it will be difficult for the Chelsea midfield to contain.

Tammy Abraham has scored in two of Chelsea's last three games after he came up empty against Newcastle, and the likes of Mason Mount and Willian will also hope to contribute. Christian Pulisic is yet to appear in the Champions League this season but could be primed for a debut in Amsterdam. Chelsea is unbeaten in its last nine European away fixtures, winning six and drawing three during that span.

The midweek clash will be the first competitive meeting between these two sides—Ajax beat the Blues 3–1 when they previously met during the preseason in July 2010.
