Premier League Clubs, Stars Pay Respects to Queen Elizabeth
Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning monarch in British history, died Thursday at the age of 96.
“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” the royal family said in the official announcement shared to Twitter. “The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”
In the wake of the news, tributes and remembrances have poured in from around the sports world. The Premier League, England’s top soccer league and one of the most prestigious sports leagues in the world, has been particularly active, with clubs and top players and personalities sharing their thoughts on social media.
“The Premier League is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Her Majesty The Queen, Elizabeth II,” the league said in a brief statement. “Our thoughts and condolences are with The Royal Family and everyone around the world mourning the loss of Her Majesty.”
Arsenal, in the middle of a Europa League match with Zurich, held a moment of silence at halftime, while Manchester United also held one prior to its Europa League match against Real Sociedad at Old Trafford.

“We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Her Majesty The Queen,” the club posted to Twitter. “Along with many of our supporters today, we will be taking time to mourn and reflect on Her Majesty’s incredible life and devoted service.
U.S. Soccer also paid tribute, saying, “To her family and the people of Great Britain, we wish you peace, strength and comfort.”
Other clubs and important members of the sports community have weighed in with similar sentiments.
