A week ahead of the 2023 NWSL draft, Angel City has acquired the No. 1 overall pick in a blockbuster three-team deal with Gotham FC and the Portland Thorns.

Angel City sent the No. 5 overall pick, a 2024 second-round pick and $200,000 in allocation money to Portland in exchange for midfielder Yazmeen Ryan, the team announced Thursday. Ryan was then sent to Gotham FC, along with an additional $250,000 in allocation money, for the No. 1 pick. Angel City is expected to draft 18-year-old U.S. women’s national team star Alyssa Thompson, according to Kevin Baxter of the Los Angeles Times.

Thompson made her senior national team debut in September at age 17. She currently holds a verbal commitment to play collegiately at Stanford, and has not yet registered for the 2023 draft. Thursday’s trade is contingent on her doing so ahead of the deadline, which is 12 a.m. PST Monday.

Angel City came in eighth place in the league last season, finishing four points shy of a playoff berth.
