Wrexham AFC, the Welsh soccer club owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, has an opportunity to earn promotion from the National League into League 2 of English football on Saturday afternoon for the first time in 15 years.

Wrexham faces Boreham Wood at 1:30 p.m. ET for an opportunity to earn promotion. Wrexham was close to promotion a year ago, losing in extra time to Grimsby Town in the promotion playoffs semifinal. Wrexham has an opportunity on Saturday to earn the No. 1 spot in the league and skip the promotion playoffs all together due to automatic qualification to jump tiers.

There are three different scenarios that would propel Wrexham into League 2 on Saturday. If Notts County, the No. 2 team in the National League, beats Maidstone United and Wrexham beats Boreham Wood, Wrexham is promoted.

If Notts County and Maidstone United draw, Wrexham can earn promotion by either beating or drawing with Boreham Wood.

Finally, if Notts County outright loses to Maidstone United on Saturday morning, Wrexham would earn promotion before even playing their game against Boreham Wood.

Stakes are high for Boreham Wood in the match against Wrexham on Saturday. Boreham Wood currently sits sixth in the league table, and needs to finish in the top seven to earn a spot in the promotion playoffs. A win against Wrexham, while spoiling Wrexham’s chances of automatic promotion on Saturday, would clinch a spot for Boreham Wood in the promotion playoffs.

Wrexham and Boreham Wood played in October to a 1–1 draw.
