Manchester United Signs Chelsea Midfielder Mason Mount in $69.4 Million Transfer
Manchester United made a big splash by announcing Chelsea star Mason Mount as its first signing of the summer.
After a lengthy negotiating process that saw United reportedly drop out of the race last week, the Red Devils agreed to a £55 million ($69.4 million) move for the 24-year-old, who joins in a five-year deal with an option for another year.
The move brings an end to Mount’s promising, yet unfulfilled career at Chelsea. After joining the club at 6 years old, Mount rose through the ranks to become an integral member of the senior team.
In total, the midfielder made 195 appearances for Chelsea along with 36 for England. He won the Champions League in 2020–21 and was named to the tournament’s team of the year and was named Chelsea’s player of the season in ’20–21 and ’21–22.
“It’s never easy leaving the club where you grew up, but Manchester United will provide an exciting new challenge for the next phase of my career,” Mount said in a statement. “Having competed against them, I know just how strong a squad it is that I’m joining, and I can’t wait to be part of this group’s drive to win major trophies.
“Everyone can see that the club has made big steps forward under Erik ten Hag. Having met with the manager and discussed his plans, I couldn’t be more excited for the seasons ahead, and am ready for the hard work expected here.”

Last season, as Chelsea burned through three managers and finished 12th on its lowest point total in EPL history, Mount set career lows for appearances (35) and goals (three).
At Old Trafford, Mount will join a handful of club legends to wear the No. 7 shirt, including David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.
